Network users are strongly advised to use a client/server configuration. To achieve this the Firebird database engine should be installed on the server. The Firebird database software is available free-of-charge under the Interbase Public Licence agreement and a copy of the Firebird Server installation software is supplied with HearAid.
Use the Firebird 1.5 installer downloaded from the HearSoft web site to install the Firebird Database Server
•HearAid 7.1x uses 32-bit Firebird 3.0, and on a network server runs a named service Firebird Server - HearAid. The full set-up installer provided by HearSoft will automatically install Firebird 3.0 in the \HearSoft\Firebird3 folder. This arrangement allows for multiple Firebird 3.0 installations to coexist, if required. The 32-bit version is used to ensure backward-compatibility with UDF files, notably HearSoftUDF.dll
•The HearAid Database used in earlier versions must be updated using the HAPump tool, also provided by HearSoft and located in the \HearSoft\Firebird3 folder. If you are upgrading to version 7.1 you should contact HearSoft to arrange installation of Firebird 3.0 and upgrading your database.
The Firebird 1.5 version used in older HearAid installations was released in 2004, was SQL-92 compliant, and by today's standards is less secure than later Firebird releases: it is for that reason Microsoft Windows updates are notorious for removing the Firebird 1.5 service from computers. In contrast, Firebird 3.0 is more stable, secure and faster that 1.5 and includes a number of significant feature improvements and functions, and complies with the SQL:2003standard. Firebird 3.0 is also better able support multiple core CPUs.
Once the Firebird Server and HearAid have been installed on the server computer, run HearAid, select Tools|Options and enter
•Either the network name or the IP address of your server (in the example shown, the server's name is "HOMER")
•The network protocol you are using (TCP/IP is recommended)
•The name of the folder on the server where you installed the HearAid.fdb database file
When installing HearAid on a network server, the Firebird Folder on Server, Database File on Server, and Backup Folder must refer to actual physical drive paths and not mapped network drives or UNC paths (for example, as shown in the Server box in the image below, where HearAid and Firebird were installed on drive C:)
When installing HearAid on a network, the Report Template Folder, e-Claim Folder and Table SQL Folder settings must be UNC paths (for example, in the image below, where HearAid was installed on drive C: on the server with the network name "HOMER")
